Product Description

Sweet Scarlet Goumi – Eleagnus multiflora
Wouldn’t you love to have a smallish (4-6ft.) shrub that is self-fertile and produces fragrant creamy white flowers in May followed by tasty (and nutritious) little red berries the size of small pie cherries? Goumi fruit is delicious fresh, dried, or in a pie or jam. Scarlet Sweet is a Ukrainian variety. This easy little shrub adapts well to any well-drained site in at least a half-day of sun, and it’s not bothered by pests or diseases. In addition, it’s actually a nitrogen-fixing plant, meaning it requires little fertilizer and makes a beneficial companion to other nearby fruiting plants. Bees love the flowers too! Goumi is also highly valued as a medicinal plant for many purposes. Begins bearing young, at 2-3 years. Ripens June-July.

Fruitscaping with Goumi Bushes

Goumi’s are gaining popularity as a new fruit for the south, due to their easy growing nature and super healthy fruit. They thrive in poor soils mainly due to the fact goumi’s are a legume. Legumes create their own nitrogen to feed themselves as well as plants in the area surrounding their root systems. People interested in permaculture or food forest gardening are particularly fond of planting them near other less hardy trees. This system of nurse planting helps the weaker plants get a stronger start, and thrive until they can fend for themselves. Goumi Berry Bushes also serve as a great edible hedge, with their silvery grey blue foliage and highly fragrant spring time blooms. Followed by their turning a bright red with fruit in early summer.

Goumi fruit is rated as one of the true super foods. High in antioxidants and vitamins. They have a taste like sour cherries and are delicious in jams or jellies. Fruit dries and stores well.

Shipping Information

Unpacking Your Plants Guide:  Prior to receiving our plants, please click this link to read our Unpacking Your Plants Guide to get to know the steps to keeping your plant healthy after receiving it.

We do NOT ship bare root:  Our trees are shipped in the same exact containers they are grown in, for the most healthy transition. The plants are watered well before they are packed and wrapped in a shipping bag to ensure they stay moist during transit.  It’s as if you came and picked them up right from our nursery yourself!

Why do we not offer free shipping? At Just Fruits, we price all of our plants online exactly as we do in the nursery. Therefore, the shipping cost is simply what it costs for us to get your order from the nursery to you. Many competitors may increase the plants’ prices in order to hide shipping costs… we do not do that. We want our customers to see exactly what the plant costs are, separate from what the shipping costs are. That way if you decided to come visit the nursery to pick up your plants instead, you would know how much you save in shipping.

Weather Watching:  We now ship all year round! However, we do watch for extreme weather. If there is extremely cold or hot weather expected around your shipment date and on your path of shipment, we will contact you and notify you that we plan to hold the shipment for the next possible shipping date with better conditions. If you ask us to still ship it, through the conditions, we will not be responsible for any damage caused to the plant & UPS will not refund any claims. We love our plants, and do not want to see them die, so we would rather wait until it’s the right time to ship it, than risk losing a plant in transit.
