Peggy’s Japanese Chestnut: Harvest Homegrown Heirlooms

About the Fruit

Peggy’s Japanese Chestnut is a culinary treasure that offers a generous yield of large, sweet nuts. Unlike its European counterparts, this chestnut variety is known for its resistance to blight and its ability to produce a bountiful crop without a pollinator. The nuts, encased in spiky burrs, are easy to peel and perfect for roasting, lending a rich, nutty flavor to both savory and sweet dishes. With Peggy’s Japanese Chestnut, autumn feasts and holiday treats will have a taste of tradition and nostalgia.

What to Know About the Tree

This stately tree is a beautiful addition to any landscape, with a grand presence that can reach up to 40 feet in height. The deciduous leaves of Peggy’s Japanese Chestnut provide a vibrant display of greenery throughout the growing season, transitioning to a golden hue in the fall. Its spreading canopy creates a serene shade, perfect for a garden retreat. The tree’s noteworthy resilience to pests and diseases makes it a favorite among growers who value both form and function.

Harvest Season

The bounty of Peggy’s Japanese Chestnut can be gathered as the summer wanes into early fall. This is when the nuts reach their peak, and the burrs begin to crack open, signaling they’re ready to be harvested. This season brings a sense of abundance and joy to the garden, with the promise of heartwarming dishes made from the freshly harvested chestnuts.

Shipping Information

Before Your Plants Arrive: You can find many guides on unpacking, planting, & care, on our growing guides page.

The Journey From Our Nursery to Your Door:  We NEVER ship our plants bare root. Your plant will travel in the very container in which it was nurtured. We thoroughly prune and water them before packing, and make sure they’re well wrapped to retain moisture during transit. It’s as though you’ve personally collected them from our nursery!

Choose Your Ship Date: We understand you’ll want to be available when your plant arrives. Our checkout process features a handy calendar that allows you to choose the Monday on which you want your plant to ship. Depending on your location, you’ll likely receive your plant by Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of that week. Once shipped, UPS will generate a tracking number and send it to the email you provided. You can then follow your plant’s journey and ensure someone is available to unpack it on arrival day.
