Lemon Grass Herb: Zesty Freshness

Culinary Purposes:

Lemon Grass Herb (Cymbopogon citratus) is a staple ingredient in many Asian cuisines, adding a zesty, citrusy flavor to dishes like curries, soups, stir-fries, and marinades. It is also commonly used in teas, cocktails, and desserts for its refreshing taste and aroma. The fibrous stalks of lemon grass can be chopped, crushed, or blended to release their intense lemony essence, enhancing the overall flavor profile of your culinary creations.

Medical Purposes:

Lemon grass is known for its potential health benefits, such as its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It is often used in traditional medicine to aid in digestion, alleviate cold and flu symptoms, reduce fever, and promote relaxation. Additionally, lemon grass essential oil is used in aromatherapy for its calming and stress-relieving effects.

What to Know About the Plant:

Lemon Grass Herb is a tall, perennial grass with long, slender leaves that are green with a hint of blue. It emits a strong citrus fragrance when crushed, resembling the scent of lemon peel. In optimal growing conditions, lemon grass can reach heights of 3 to 6 feet, making it an excellent choice for container gardening or outdoor landscapes. It thrives in warm, sunny locations with well-draining soil and regular watering.

Enhancing Your Fruitscape:

Integrating Lemon Grass Herb into your fruitscape design adds a burst of freshness and flavor to your edible garden. It pairs well with a variety of fruit trees, such as citrus (e.g., lemon, lime, orange), enhancing their tropical essence with its citrusy aroma. Berry plants like strawberries or raspberries can also benefit from the insect-repelling properties of lemon grass, creating a natural barrier against pests. In addition, herbs like basil, mint, and cilantro can complement the flavors of lemon grass in culinary dishes, creating a harmonious and aromatic garden space.

Planting & Care
Fruitscaping with Herbs & Veggies

Every good kitchen garden needs to have an herb section. A walk through a garden planted with herbs is truly a sensual experience. Their beautifully textured leaves invite you to stop and touch them, and then reward you with a delightful array of heavenly scents. Herbs can serve many functions in the edible landscape, creepers like oregano, mints and thyme make great ground cover. Low growers like sage, chives and perennial onions are good for edging flower beds and will help in insect control. Taller evergreens like rosemary are wonderful used as low hedges or for planting around the foundation of houses. Herbs also lend themselves well to being grown in containers. Tuck a few pots close to the kitchen so they’ll be handy when you need them.

Growing your own herbs is well worth the effort. The quality and flavor of fresh picked herbs is so much better than the dried products you find in the grocery store. Our climate makes it possible to grow a very wide range of herbs. The hot humid summer are perfect for herbs like basil, Thai ginger and tea camellias. Try the more Mediterranean herbs like lavender,  sage and Thyme in the winter time, they love the cool and are less apt to succumb to fungus.
