Gainey Sweet Pomegranate – Local Heirloom!
We have Ray Gainey to thank for the introduction of this heirloom variety. Ray has been the caretaker of this family heirloom that has grown on his family farm in Cairo Georgia for generations. If you like sweet pomegranates, try Gainey Sweet. Fruit is red blushed skinned with beautiful light pink arils. Squeezed out, the juice is wonderful over ice, for a natural home made snow cone. Fruit ripens middle to late September. Grow in containers in northern climates.

Fruitscaping with Pomegranate Trees
At one time everyone had a pomegranate tree in their yard. Nowadays this fruit is a rare curiosity, with most of its uses forgotten. Pomegranate juice is a true delicacy, a cross between the flavor of raspberries and strawberries. It’s great just by itself, with a little sugar and shaved ice, or it can be made into a jelly or even a fantastic fruity wine. Mediterranean cooking uses it in complex sauces for meats and vegetables. In ancient times, this was called the nectar of the gods!
Bring back this ancient beauty to your garden. Willowy, shiny, emerald green plants that are quite showy when in bloom, with large, red, trumpet-shaped flowers. That’s a pomegranate! Flowering begins in May and continues for several weeks. Hummingbirds love the flowers, which are followed by a colorful show of pomegranate fruit that hangs on the trees like Christmas tree ornaments ’til frost. Pomegranates may be pruned into graceful, small trees, trained to a wall in espalier, or planted four feet apart to make one of the most colorful hedges around. You may plant pomegranates in a large container to enjoy in a patio setting. Fall color is a gorgeous bright yellow. Remember, Pomegranates prefer well-drained soils and part to full sun.

Fun Recipe
Pomegranate Ice
Loosen and break apart the seeds of 6 ripe pomegranates. Place in a bowl and crush lightly with a spoon. Squeeze the pulp through a jelly bag. Alternatively, use an old fashioned lever-style citrus juicer which is really great for extracting the juice. These show up at yard sales all the time.
Sweeten lightly with honey or sugar to taste and pour over shaved ice for a cool, refreshing late summer drink.

Pomegranates as a Commercial Crop in Florida
As in all things, what is old comes back as something new. The pomegranate is making a comeback as a potentially new commercial fruit in Florida. Shipping Restrictions
We’re so sorry… but due to agricultural restrictions we cannot ship any plants outside of the United States, or to the states of California, Hawaii and Alaska. Also, citrus trees cannot be shipped outside of the state of Florida.
Here are some important things to know about your shipments
Unpacking Your Plants Guide:  Prior to receiving our plants, please click this link to read our Unpacking Your Plants Guide to get to know the steps to keeping your plant healthy after receiving it.
We do NOT ship bare root:  Our trees are shipped in the same exact containers they are grown in, for the most healthy transition. The plants are watered well before they are packed and wrapped in a shipping bag to ensure they stay moist during transit. It’s as if you came and picked them up right from our nursery yourself!
Why do we not offer free shipping? At Just Fruits, we price all of our plants online exactly as we do in the nursery. Therefore, the shipping cost is simply what it costs for us to get your order from the nursery to you. Many competitors may increase the plants’ prices in order to hide shipping costs… we do not do that. We want our customers to see exactly what the plant costs are, separate from what the shipping costs are. That way if you decided to come visit the nursery to pick up your plants instead, you would know how much you save in shipping.
Weather Watching:  We now ship all year round! However, we do watch for extreme weather. If there is extremely cold or hot weather expected around your shipment date and on your path of shipment, we will contact you and notify you that we plan to hold the shipment for the next possible shipping date with better conditions. If you ask us to still ship it, through the conditions, we will not be responsible for any damage caused to the plant & UPS will not refund any claims. We love our plants, and do not want to see them die, so we would rather wait until it’s the right time to ship it, than risk losing a plant in transit.
