OKAME Always recognizable even in winter by their gorgeously textured, horizontally striated reddish trunks, flowering cherry trees are among the most lovely of ornamental tree specimens. In the very early spring, Okame's showy, mildly fragrant pink blossoms unfold from deep maroon buds, and float like a delicate rosy cloud over the winter landscape for several weeks. In more northern regions the fall leaf coloration is quite striking, with a mixed show of bold yellows, oranges and reds. Tolerant of the heat at least as far south as Orlando, Okame makes an outstanding small (to about 15-20'), fast-growing architectural addition to your landscape throughout the year (picture it lining a driveway or as a star in your little courtyard). YOSHINO Like Okame, Yoshino is a gorgeous ornamental tree well suited to the small landscape, but not generally found as far south as Okame. Cherry blossom festivals in Washington, D.C. (where 3000 were a gift from the Japanese in 1912) and in Macon, GA rely on Yoshino for their lavish displays of the faintly almond-scented bloom.
